Oura launches redesigned app and ‘Cumulative Stress’ feature

On Monday, Oura introduced an exciting overhaul of its app alongside a groundbreaking ‘Cumulative Stress’ feature. The announcement also highlighted the company's ongoing quest for FDA clearance to launch blood pressure monitoring capabilities, which will help assess users’ risk of hypertension. The revamped Oura app focuses on personalization with three primary tabs designed to enhance user experience. The ‘Today’ tab showcases the most pertinent insights for daily health decisions, while the ‘Vitals’ tab offers quick snapshots of critical metrics such as sleep quality, stress levels, and cardiovascular health. Users can also explore their long-term well-being through the ‘My Health’ tab, which emphasizes personal strengths, trends, and potential areas for proactive health management. Additionally, this section introduces ‘Habits’ and ‘Routines’ to illustrate how daily choices impact overall health. A notable enhancement in the app is the expanded menstrual cycle insights, now providing a comprehensive 12-month forecast for menstrual and fertile windows, a significant upgrade from the previous one-month view. The newly introduced Cumulative Stress feature empowers users to better understand how chronic stress accumulates and affects their health over time. It calculates a stress score based on a month’s worth of data, updated weekly, and takes into account five critical factors: sleep continuity, heart stress-response, micro-motions during sleep, temperature regulation, and the impact of daily activity. Jason Russell, Oura's VP of Consumer Software Product, explained the depth of this feature, stating, “It’s much more than just tallying the hours spent in stressful periods. It’s actually measuring different bodily functions indicative of cumulative stress taking a toll on your body.” He emphasized that the feature tracks how various metrics, such as heart rate and sleep patterns, respond to stress, providing insights into users’ overall stress levels. The Cumulative Stress feature is set to launch globally in the upcoming weeks. In addition to this, Oura is initiating a Blood Pressure Profile study aimed at detecting early hypertension indicators by passively tracking essential signals. This study, which has gained approval from the Institutional Review Board, will take place at Oura Labs in the U.S. Participants will receive assessments of their hypertension risk based on data from the Oura Ring, complemented by a brief questionnaire regarding personal health history and lifestyle. This announcement follows Oura’s recent achievement of securing $900 million in funding from Fidelity Management & Research Co. and other investors, as well as the launch of the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic collection, its first charging case, and a new feature allowing members to schedule blood work directly within the app.
