Oura Ring 5 review: Thinner, lighter, better

Unboxing the Oura Ring 5 was a delightful surprise, as its petite form immediately stood out. This much-anticipated smart ring is significantly smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the Oura Ring 4 Ceramic. Measuring at just 6.09 mm in width and 2.28 mm in thickness, the Ring 5 is 40% smaller, making it easier and more comfortable to wear. Weighing between 2 and 2.69 grams, depending on size, the Ring 5 offers a drastic reduction in heft compared to the Ring 4, which weighs between 3.3 and 5.2 grams. This enhanced design not only improves comfort but also allows the ring to seamlessly blend with other jewelry, eliminating the previous bulky appearance. Priced starting at $399, the Ring 5 aims to cater to a broader audience, particularly those who previously found smart rings cumbersome. Oura has recognized the demand for a more discreet design, responding to user feedback for a slimmer option. The introduction of the Ring 5 comes as the company faces competition from rivals like RingConn and Ultrahuman, which offer lighter alternatives. While the Ring 4 was never particularly uncomfortable, the Ring 5 feels almost weightless, allowing for longer wear without noticing it on the finger. Comfort is especially noticeable during sleep, where the Ring 5 excels as a more pleasant option compared to a smartwatch. Battery life is also improved, lasting between six to nine days versus five to eight days for the Ring 4. After a brief charging session post-setup, I found that I still had ample battery life after continuous wear. In terms of sizing, the Ring 5 is available in six sizes (from 6 to 13), reduced from the Ring 4's broader range (4 to 15), due to manufacturing challenges. Six finishes are offered, including a revamped Gold that presents a more authentic gold appearance, as well as Silver, Brushed Silver, Black, and Stealth, with the Gold variant priced at $499. Durability has also been enhanced, with Oura claiming the Ring 5 is more scratch-resistant thanks to a new finishing technique. Early indications suggest that it maintains its premium look well, although long-term testing will reveal its true durability. Accompanying the launch of the Ring 5 are new software features, including Blood Pressure Signals and Nighttime Breathing, which will also be available for the Oura Ring Gen3 and later models. Overall, the Oura Ring 5 represents a significant advancement in terms of comfort and design, making it an appealing choice for newcomers to smart rings, while existing Ring 4 users may weigh their decision to upgrade based on personal preferences and budget.
