Oura has taken a significant step forward by acquiring Doublepoint, a startup renowned for its innovative gesture recognition technology. This announcement, made on Thursday, highlights Oura's ambition to integrate intuitive control mechanisms into its line of smart rings. While the financial details of the transaction remain undisclosed, the implications for wearables are substantial. Doublepoint's technology enables devices to interpret subtle hand movements, facilitating faster and more natural interactions across various platforms. In a recent press release, Oura emphasized that this advancement, combined with its continuous sensing capabilities, will lead to the development of innovative features that seamlessly enhance everyday life without requiring active engagement. The company envisions a future where wearable AI is driven by both voice and gesture inputs, and the acquisition of Doublepoint is seen as a catalyst to realize this vision. Following a robust year for Oura and the smart ring sector, the company, which was valued at approximately $11 billion last fall, has seen its ring sales soar to 5.5 million, a significant jump from 2.5 million in June 2024. Looking ahead, Oura projects sales to surpass $1.5 billion by 2026. The smart ring market has experienced remarkable growth, with shipments increasing nearly 51% in 2025, according to IDC, positioning Oura as a frontrunner in the industry. This acquisition will bolster Oura's team with talented AI architects from Helsinki-based Doublepoint, including its four founders, who will be instrumental in shaping the company's AI-driven future. Oura CEO Tom Hale remarked, "Strategic acquisitions are crucial for accelerating our growth and expanding our device capabilities. Welcoming the Doublepoint team enriches our talent pool, reinforces our long-term dedication to growth in Finland, and enables us to deliver intuitive, human-centric experiences across our ecosystem." This acquisition marks Oura's fourth, following purchases of Sparta Science, Veri, and Proxy, reflecting its commitment to innovation and leadership in the wearables space.
