SpaceX crane collapse in Texas being investigated by OSHA

A crane collapse at SpaceX's Starbase facility in Texas on Tuesday has triggered an investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The federal agency confirmed the inquiry in an email to CNBC. The incident, which was livestreamed by Lab Padre—a channel dedicated to SpaceX—quickly circulated across various social media platforms, including X, owned by SpaceX's CEO, Elon Musk. Currently, it remains unclear if any employees were injured during the collapse. Attempts to reach Musk and other executives for comments were unsuccessful. An OSHA spokesperson indicated that further information would be released upon the conclusion of the investigation. SpaceX has faced scrutiny in the past due to workplace injuries that surpass industry norms. Notably, in 2014, an employee named Simon LeBlanc tragically lost his life on the job, a situation OSHA attributed to the company’s failure to mitigate clear hazards. This latest incident comes amid a backdrop of challenges for SpaceX, including a series of explosions linked to its Starship Super Heavy launch vehicle, which is pivotal for Musk's vision of enabling human travel to Mars. Environmental advocates in both the U.S. and Mexico have raised concerns that these explosions could be detrimental to local habitats and wildlife. In response to the recent explosions, SpaceX has claimed that its operations did not harm the surrounding environment during the most recent incident on June 18. Additionally, the Starship rocket was once anticipated to play a crucial role in NASA's lunar exploration efforts. SpaceX has secured over $20 billion in government contracts, primarily from the Department of Defense and NASA. However, uncertainty looms over NASA's upcoming budget proposal, which has yet to receive Congressional approval and may impact its collaborations with SpaceX. Musk, a significant financial supporter of former President Donald Trump, previously attempted to have his associate, Jared Isaacman, appointed as NASA's leader during Trump's second term, although the nomination was eventually withdrawn amidst political tensions. As the investigation unfolds, the implications of the crane collapse may go beyond immediate safety concerns, potentially affecting SpaceX's future projects and partnerships.
