Google's inaugural Chromecast, launched in 2014, quickly became a favorite among consumers, selling 10 million units in its first year. The device provided a straightforward method for streaming internet content directly to televisions, filling a gap in homes that still relied on non-smart TVs. Its user-friendly design allowed users to simply press 'Cast' in their apps, select their Chromecast-enabled TV, and begin watching without the clutter of a user interface or advertisements. Despite Google ceasing support for the $35 device in 2023, many original Chromecasts continue to function in homes today. Recently, however, numerous users reported their original Chromecast devices had abruptly stopped casting from popular platforms like Chrome, YouTube, and Paramount+. This led to widespread speculation, including a thread on Reddit where a user claimed both of their first-generation Chromecasts ceased functioning simultaneously. Some feared that Google had intentionally disabled the devices to encourage users to upgrade. In response to these concerns, Sahana Mysore, a senior product manager for Google Home, clarified to Ars Technica that the devices had not been intentionally disabled. "Earlier this week, a technical issue temporarily disrupted casting for some Gen 1 Google Chromecast users. Our team quickly identified the root cause and resolved the issue," she stated. Following this announcement, many users reported that their devices were operational again. Additionally, there was rising anxiety among owners of older Chromecast models as a report emerged indicating that Google had officially discontinued support for all devices except for the 2022 Chromecast with Google TV (HD). Nevertheless, the support page still reflects that all models, apart from the first-generation Chromecast, are receiving critical security updates, offering some reassurance to users.
