In a groundbreaking move for the integration of artificial intelligence with the physical realm, Origin Lab has successfully raised $8 million in seed funding to leverage video game data for world-model builders. This funding round, spearheaded by Lightspeed Ventures, also saw participation from SV Angel, Eniac, Seven Stars, and FPV, alongside investments from notable figures such as Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and Cruise founder Kyle Vogt. As AI technology seeks to better understand and interact with the physical world, the need for quality training data has become increasingly critical. Unlike large language models, which have ample data sources, world-model builders have struggled to gather the necessary information. Origin Lab aims to bridge this gap by providing a marketplace where labs focused on world models can purchase high-quality, licensed data derived from video games. Co-CEO and co-founder Anne-Margot Rodde highlighted the potential of video games as a treasure trove of valuable data. "The AI systems that are being built now need to understand how the physical world works and how things move," she explained. Origin Lab’s platform allows video game companies to monetize their digital assets while converting them into usable training data for AI labs, which may include anything from rendering runs to automating lengthy gameplay footage. Historically, the challenge of licensing and data quality has hindered labs from fully capitalizing on video game footage. A notable incident occurred in December 2024 when OpenAI's initial Sora video-generation model faced criticism for seemingly replicating popular video game content, likely due to its training on Twitch streams. Amazon has also expressed interest in utilizing Twitch footage for AI model training. Origin Lab's fundraising success signals a burgeoning market for AI training data and innovative startups that connect video game companies with AI labs. Faraz Fatemi, a partner at Lightspeed who led the investment, remarked on the significant opportunity, noting that the revenue potential for data vendors catering to major AI labs is substantial. "These are very well-capitalized businesses, and the bottleneck for all of them is data," Fatemi stated, underscoring the critical role that data supply will play in the future of AI development.
