Oratomic raises $300M to build a viable quantum computer that needs only 20K qubits

Oratomic, a promising startup in the quantum computing race, has successfully raised $300 million in a significant Series A funding round. This investment, co-led by ARCH Venture Partners, Spark Capital, and Khosla Ventures, saw participation from notable investors including Bezos Expeditions and Index Ventures. Founded by physicists from Caltech, Oratomic aims to create a utility-scale quantum computer by the end of the decade. The company employs lasers to manipulate individual atoms, which serve as the foundation for its innovative approach to quantum computing. Remarkably, Oratomic’s research team has discovered a method to correct errors using far fewer qubits than previously believed necessary, a breakthrough critical for the advancement of practical quantum systems. Co-founder and CEO Dolev Bluvstein expressed that their recent advancements transformed their outlook on the feasibility of launching a quantum computing enterprise. "Previously, we thought it was too distant a goal," he stated. “But the breakthroughs we achieved changed our perspective completely.” Unlike many of its competitors focused on developing noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) systems for research purposes, Oratomic is charting a different course. Bluvstein emphasized that their goal is distinct from that of PsiQuantum, a startup valued at $7 billion, which aims to deliver a million-qubit quantum computer by next year. Oratomic's strategy is to utilize approximately 10,000 to 20,000 qubits, and they have already demonstrated essential components at a smaller scale. The implications of a fully operational quantum computer are vast, potentially transforming numerous fields that rely on complex calculations, such as biotechnology, chemistry, logistics, artificial intelligence, and cryptography. This surge of interest in quantum technology has not gone unnoticed, with many startups like Infleqtion and Quantanium making headlines this year. Existing public companies in the sector, such as Rigetti and IonQ, have also seen significant increases in their stock prices over the past 18 months. Investor Vinod Khosla is particularly optimistic about Oratomic's prospects, labeling it his firm’s largest initial investment to date on social media.
