No meeting, no warning, just a mail: Oracle layoffs 2026 raise questions on process, pay, and scale

In the wake of Oracle's recent layoffs, which affected thousands of employees worldwide, the tech sector is grappling with the implications of such drastic workforce reductions. The layoffs have sent shockwaves through the industry, raising serious concerns about employee treatment and job security in an age increasingly dominated by artificial intelligence. On March 31, Oracle employees received a shocking email at 6 AM notifying them of their termination, with immediate access restrictions to company systems. One affected employee, who is pregnant, shared her distress on LinkedIn: "No call. No meeting. No manager. No warning. Just an email." In India alone, reports suggest that approximately 12,000 employees were impacted, leaving many facing sudden job loss and the accompanying emotional and financial turmoil. As employees navigate this upheaval, some have been forced to return to their hometowns to manage expenses and reassess their career paths. One story highlighted a man who, after losing his job, moved back to Bhubaneswar from Bengaluru. Fortunately, he had built some savings to fall back on, including fixed deposits in joint accounts, which provided him with a sense of security. The harsh realities of these layoffs have been echoed by others, including a husband who recounted the experience of his pregnant wife. He lamented the lack of communication from Oracle, stating, "This morning she woke up locked out of every Oracle system she had access to. This is the human cost behind the headlines. She deserves better than an email." Another poignant narrative shared on LinkedIn involved a long-serving employee who was let go after 34 years at Oracle. This story drew attention to the stark contrast between Oracle's financial performance—reporting a 95% increase in net income last quarter—and the fate of its employees as the company invests heavily in AI. In response to the layoffs, Oracle is reportedly offering severance packages to its impacted employees in India. These packages include 15 days of base salary for each year of service, leave encashment, and two months of fixed salary, alongside a month of gardening leave and insurance benefits. The specifics of the severance pay depend on various factors, including tenure and role. While Oracle is restructuring its workforce, it is also making significant investments in AI infrastructure. The company recently signed a five-year, $300 billion cloud computing agreement with OpenAI, which will involve building a large AI data center across the U.S. Despite these ambitious plans, Oracle is also faced with financial challenges, including a negative cash flow and over $100 billion in total debt. The ongoing layoffs highlight the high stakes and risks associated with Oracle's aggressive push into AI technology, revealing the real impact on employees around the globe.
