Oracle's Larry Ellison downplays software apocalypse fears: 'We think the SaaSpocalypse applies to others, but not to us'

During a recent earnings call, Oracle's Chairman, Larry Ellison, addressed growing concerns surrounding the impact of AI on software-as-a-service (SaaS) companies. He confidently stated that the so-called 'Saaspocalypse' is a challenge that will affect other firms, but not Oracle. Ellison emphasized Oracle's advanced coding tools, which he believes enable the development of comprehensive software solutions designed to automate entire ecosystems, such as healthcare and financial services. He remarked, "That's what we're doing at Oracle. We're a disruptor, and that’s why we think the Saaspocalypse applies to others but not to us." The apprehension regarding AI's potential to replace conventional software has surged recently, particularly following the release of new AI tools by Anthropic, which led to a decline in stocks of several software companies, including Salesforce and Asana. Oracle's CEO, Mike Sicilia, echoed Ellison's sentiments during the earnings call, stating that while AI tools could pose a threat, Oracle is rapidly integrating them into its offerings. "We are building brand new SaaS products using AI and embedding AI agents into our existing applications," Sicilia noted. He also pointed out that customers are not eager to abandon their established systems for the promise of niche AI features. "I've not yet met a customer ready to replace their core banking or electronic health record systems overnight with AI solutions. In fact, we hear quite the opposite from customers." Other industry leaders, like Salesforce's CEO Marc Benioff, have also reassured stakeholders about the resilience of SaaS companies in the face of AI advancements. He likened the potential 'SaaSpocalypse' to a mythical creature, suggesting that the robust use of SaaS solutions, now enhanced by AI agents, will ensure their sustained relevance. Similarly, Workday's CEO Aneel Bhusri defended the necessity of complex security and regulatory measures in HR and business software, highlighting that even leading AI companies are utilizing their systems. As Oracle and its competitors navigate the evolving landscape of AI and SaaS, the dialogue around the future of these technologies continues to unfold, with industry leaders expressing confidence in their adaptability and innovation.
