‘Build more with fewer people’: Oracle signalled job cuts weeks earlier in earnings release

Oracle recently revealed plans for workforce changes, which became evident when employees received unexpected termination emails early in the morning. According to a report by the Times of India, the company had previously hinted at these transformations during its Q3 FY2026 earnings announcement, citing a shift towards artificial intelligence and the need to adapt to evolving technological demands. The company stated, "AI models for generating computer code have become so efficient that we have been restructuring our product development teams into smaller, more agile and productive groups." This move, while framed as an operational enhancement, indicated a clear reduction in the need for manpower. In the aftermath, layoffs affected various departments, including Oracle Health, Cloud, Sales, Customer Success, and the India Development Centre for NetSuite. The earnings report revealed that the restructuring process was not a sudden development. In fact, Oracle's restructuring charges for the first nine months of FY2026 had surged nearly tenfold compared to the same period last year, hinting at a sustained effort to cut costs that had gone largely unnoticed until now. The company had previously announced its most extensive restructuring initiative in September 2025, which foresaw billions in expenditures over several fiscal years. Although this plan initially received little attention, the recent layoffs have drawn it back into the spotlight. For many employees, the announcement came with little warning, as termination emails arrived early and access to company systems was revoked shortly thereafter. Some were instructed to finalize their departure through online links before losing internal access. In certain instances, managers cited performance-based reasons for exits; however, the overall restructuring aligns with Oracle's strategy to leverage AI for greater efficiency and streamlined teams. This trend echoes a broader movement within the tech industry, where AI-driven productivity improvements are reshaping hiring practices, team configurations, and long-term workforce strategies.
