Oracle’s 21,000 layoffs help drive its debt-fueled AI investments

Oracle's strategic shift towards artificial intelligence has led to significant workforce reductions, with the company laying off 21,000 employees over the past year. This information was disclosed in a recent filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. According to Oracle's report for the fiscal year ending May 31, the company currently employs 141,000 full-time workers, down from 162,000 reported in 2025. The 12.9 percent decrease in workforce coincides with the company's ongoing commitment to adopting AI technologies across its operations. In the filing, Oracle noted, "The adoption and deployment of AI technologies across our operations have resulted, and may continue to result, in reductions to our workforce.” These job cuts are not solely the result of technological advancement; they are also linked to substantial capital investments aimed at enhancing Oracle’s data center capabilities to support AI workloads. The recent filing highlighted that many initiatives from the 2026 Restructuring Plan were designed to bolster the development, marketing, and delivery of its cloud services. In a bold move, Oracle aims to raise between $45 billion and $50 billion by 2026 to further develop its Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, which caters to notable clients such as OpenAI, xAI, AMD, Nvidia, and Meta. Approximately half of this capital will be sourced through debt, while the remainder will come from equity. This aggressive financial strategy has raised concerns among investors regarding Oracle's mounting debt, which currently exceeds $120 billion, as outlined in its fiscal year 2026 earnings report. Additionally, bondholders have filed a lawsuit against Oracle, alleging that the company concealed the necessity to increase its debt for AI infrastructure development, leading to investor losses.
