Oracle Cloud to deploy 50,000 AMD AI chips, signaling new Nvidia competition

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure has announced plans to integrate 50,000 graphics processors from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) into its operations beginning in the latter half of 2026. This strategic move highlights the growing trend among cloud providers to adopt AMD's GPUs as viable alternatives to Nvidia's leading offerings in the artificial intelligence sector. Karan Batta, senior vice president of Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, expressed confidence in AMD's potential, particularly within the inferencing domain. "We believe customers will embrace AMD wholeheartedly," he told CNBC's Seema Mody. The deployment will feature AMD's Instinct MI450 chips, which were unveiled earlier this year. These chips represent AMD's inaugural foray into AI hardware that can be interconnected into a larger, unified system, enabling up to 72 chips to function collectively—essential for executing advanced AI algorithms. The collaboration gained further visibility when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined AMD CEO Lisa Su at a recent event to launch the MI450. Batta praised AMD's efforts, stating, "AMD has done a fantastic job, much like Nvidia, and both companies have their unique advantages." He emphasized the significance of AMD's software stack, predicting robust customer adoption in the inferencing market. Earlier this month, OpenAI secured a multi-year agreement with AMD for processors that will demand six gigawatts of energy, with an initial rollout of one gigawatt set for 2026. This deal could potentially grant OpenAI a stake of up to 10% in AMD, translating to 160 million shares if the partnership proves successful. Additionally, OpenAI recently entered a five-year cloud contract with Oracle, valued at nearly $300 billion. Historically, OpenAI has relied heavily on Nvidia's chips for developing technologies like ChatGPT, with Nvidia commanding over 90% of the data center GPU market. Despite this, OpenAI leaders assert the necessity of diversifying their computing power sources, prompting their interest in multiple chip suppliers. OpenAI is also exploring the design of proprietary AI chips in collaboration with Broadcom. At the Oracle AI World conference on Tuesday, founder and chairman Larry Ellison is scheduled to discuss the implications of the OpenAI partnership and outline Oracle's strategies for maintaining a competitive edge against major rivals like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google. Analysts, such as Daniel Newman from The Futurum Group, remark that Oracle is making significant investments to seize the AI opportunity, but must also demonstrate its ability to leverage its extensive data and enterprise capabilities to deliver substantial value in the AI landscape.
