Opera wants you to pay $20 a month to use its AI-powered browser Neon

Norwegian browser developer Opera has officially rolled out its AI-integrated browser, Neon, to the public, introducing a monthly subscription fee of $19.90. This move comes after several months of testing, with Neon being initially unveiled in May and made available to a select group of users in October. Neon distinguishes itself from other AI-centric browsers, such as Comet by Perplexity and Atlas by OpenAI, by incorporating a built-in AI chatbot within its interface. This feature allows users to query information about web pages, generate mini-applications and videos, and automate various tasks. The browser cleverly utilizes your browsing history to provide context, enabling you to retrieve details from previously viewed content, such as YouTube videos or articles. Additionally, users can create “Cards” for repetitive tasks using custom prompts, while a robust research agent offers comprehensive data on any subject matter. New organizational tools, dubbed Tasks, provide segmented environments for AI chats and tabs, resembling a blend of Tab Groups and Arc Browser’s Spaces. For subscribers, access is granted to advanced models including Gemini 3 Pro, GPT-5.1, Veo 3.1, and Nano Banana Pro. Moreover, they can join Opera’s Discord community and engage directly with its development team. Krystian Kolondra, Opera’s EVP of browsers, stated, “Opera Neon is designed for those eager to explore cutting-edge AI technology. It’s a dynamic project with frequent updates, and we’re thrilled to open early access to a broader audience.” While Opera embraces a rapid AI evolution, other browser developers are adopting a more gradual approach. Recently, Google highlighted its ongoing security measures to safeguard users against potential vulnerabilities associated with AI features. In parallel, Brave has begun previewing its own AI functionalities in a nightly build, offering users an isolated profile for AI interactions to maintain separation from traditional browsing activities.
