Openvibe combines news and social media in one app

Openvibe, the innovative app that consolidates various open social networks such as Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and Nostr, is taking a significant leap forward by introducing the ability to follow news sites and blogs. This new functionality is powered by RSS (Really Simple Syndication), a widely recognized standard that allows users to receive automatic updates from their favorite websites, including new articles and blog posts. This enhancement positions Openvibe as a more comprehensive tool for users looking to stay updated on their interests without the hassle of toggling between numerous newsreaders and social media platforms. By incorporating RSS, Openvibe steps into a competitive arena alongside other content aggregators and social media applications. Noteworthy competitors include Tapestry, a new app from the creators of the well-known Twitter client Twitterific; Feeeed, which enables tracking social profiles on platforms like Mastodon and YouTube; and Surf, an open social app and browser created by the team behind Flipboard. According to Openvibe's CEO, Matej Svancer, the integration of RSS was a part of the app’s long-term vision since its inception last year. However, user demand propelled the feature's development to the forefront of their priorities. Users can easily add RSS sources individually, explore suggestions within the app, or import an entire OPML file from other news readers. To enhance user experience, Openvibe plans to implement a leaderboard showcasing the most followed feeds, guiding users toward popular content. The app allows users to monitor their RSS updates within a unified home feed or a dedicated RSS feed, with the option to create custom feeds. Although RSS can also be utilized for tracking podcasts and YouTube channels, Svancer clarifies that the app is not yet optimized for these formats. Currently, Openvibe focuses on delivering news and blogs directly within the app in a streamlined, distraction-free reading mode, with an adjustable setting for those who prefer browsing the web. Additionally, Openvibe features a “Performance Mode” that disables image loading in timeline previews, thereby enhancing resource efficiency. Prior to the feature’s launch, the company conducted testing with a group of over 100 users, who collectively added more than 4,000 feeds. The RSS support is now available on both iOS and Android platforms. While the app remains free of charge and without in-app purchases for the time being, there are plans to introduce a subscription model in the future. Openvibe is currently supported by initial funding from Czech Founders VC, Tensor Ventures, and Automattic, the parent company of WordPress.com and Tumblr.
