OpenMind wants to be the Android operating system of humanoid robots

In a landscape dominated by hardware advancements in robotics, OpenMind, a startup based in Silicon Valley, is making strides in the software domain. The company is developing a versatile software layer, named OM1, intended to serve as an operating system for humanoid robots. OpenMind positions itself as the 'Android for robotics,' emphasizing that its software is open-source and compatible with various hardware. According to OpenMind's founder, Stanford professor Jan Liphardt, while robots have long been capable of performing repetitive tasks, the emergence of humanoid robots designed for enhanced human-to-machine interactions necessitates a more sophisticated operating system. Liphardt expressed excitement about the potential for machines to interact with humans in unprecedented ways, stating, "We see ourselves as a bridge between machines and humans." Recently, the company introduced an innovative protocol named FABRIC, which empowers robots to verify identities and exchange contextual information with one another. Liphardt highlighted the advantage of machines being able to learn rapidly, suggesting that improved connectivity among robots could facilitate knowledge sharing, such as learning different languages collaboratively, thereby enhancing their interactions with people. Liphardt noted, "Humans naturally engage with one another, leveraging a rich infrastructure of trust and communication. Machines will need to establish similar frameworks." Founded in 2024, OpenMind is preparing to launch its inaugural fleet of 10 OM1-powered robotic dogs by September. Liphardt emphasized the importance of user feedback in refining the technology, stating that they anticipate receiving valuable insights from early adopters. The company recently secured $20 million in funding, led by Pantera Capital, with additional backing from Ribbit, Coinbase Ventures, and Pebblebed, among other investors. With this new capital, OpenMind is focused on integrating its technology into everyday homes and rapidly iterating on its products. Liphardt concluded, "Our primary goal is to deploy robots widely and gather user feedback, enabling us to identify opportunities where our robots can meet human needs effectively."
