OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, is intensifying its efforts to monetize its vast user base. With a focus on closing the gap with competitors like Anthropic, which has successfully tapped into the coding tools market, OpenAI is shifting its strategy from merely providing services to generating revenue through advertisements. As of January, OpenAI's flagship product, ChatGPT, boasted an impressive user count of 900 million. However, a staggering 850 million of these users contribute little to no revenue. To address this, OpenAI is implementing an ad strategy aimed at converting these free users into consistent revenue sources. Despite being in the early stages of this advertising initiative, OpenAI reports promising early results, projecting potential earnings of $100 million annually just two months after launching ads. However, the company acknowledges that significant work remains ahead. They are in the process of building a dedicated team and enhancing the technology necessary for a robust advertising business. Recently, they brought on a senior executive from Meta to lead their sales efforts. Currently, OpenAI is charging advertisers around $60 for every 1,000 impressions, but in practice, they are securing rates closer to $15 as they establish their footing in this new market. It's important to note that users subscribed to ChatGPT Go, which costs $8 per month, will also encounter ads, alongside those using the free version. The journey to a sustainable ad revenue model is just beginning for OpenAI, and industry watchers are keenly observing how this strategy unfolds.
