In a remarkable achievement, OpenAI's newly launched video generation application, Sora, has claimed the top position in Apple's App Store for free apps. Released on Tuesday, Sora enables users to create short AI-generated videos, remix existing content, and share their creations on a communal feed. Currently, Sora is exclusively available on iOS devices and operates on an invite-only basis, requiring users to obtain a code for access. Despite this limitation, the app has quickly ascended to the number one spot, surpassing competitors such as Google's Gemini and OpenAI's own ChatGPT. Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI, expressed his excitement about the app's reception on X, stating, "It's been epic to see what the collective creativity of humanity is capable of so far. The team is iterating fast and listening to feedback." Sora utilizes OpenAI's advanced model, Sora 2, which is designed to generate highly realistic video and audio content. OpenAI has made efforts to mitigate safety concerns associated with Sora by allowing users to manage how their likeness is represented on the platform. However, some initial content, including a controversial video featuring CEO Sam Altman in a fictional shoplifting scenario, has raised questions about the app's implications for legality and ethics. In a post on X, Altman acknowledged the potential downsides of AI video generation, stating, "It is easy to imagine the degenerate case of AI video generation that ends up with us all being sucked into an RL-optimized slop feed. The team has put great care and thought into trying to make a delightful product that doesn't fall into that trap, and has come up with a number of promising ideas."
