OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirms content control and revenue sharing for AI video app Sora

OpenAI has rolled out significant updates to its AI video application, Sora, enabling content owners to gain more control over how their characters are utilized. This initiative includes a revenue-sharing model for creators who grant permission for their intellectual property to be featured in the app. In a recent blog post, CEO Sam Altman emphasized that these enhancements will allow rights holders, such as film and television studios, to exercise refined control over the generation of their characters. The newly launched Sora, initially available in the United States and Canada, allows users to produce videos lasting up to ten seconds. This app has quickly garnered attention, empowering users to create AI-generated videos that may include copyrighted content, which can be shared through social media channels. Altman pointed out that the demand for such content has exceeded expectations, often catering to niche audiences. He stressed the importance of establishing a monetization strategy, acknowledging that the revenue-sharing framework will require experimentation to optimize. OpenAI plans to pilot various approaches within Sora before standardizing a model across its broader product lineup. This policy is likely to spark discussions in Hollywood, especially as several major studios, including Disney, have chosen not to allow their characters to appear in the app. OpenAI, with backing from Microsoft, initially launched a public version of Sora last year, expanding its footprint in the realm of multimodal AI and competing with similar offerings from Meta and Google. Recently, Meta unveiled Vibes, a platform for creating and sharing short-form AI videos, further intensifying the competition in this innovative space.
