OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap calls the AI giant the 'world's most active Slack user'

OpenAI employees are heavily utilizing Slack as their primary communication tool, showcasing a robust internal culture of collaboration. On a recent episode of Fortune's "Term Sheet" podcast, COO Brad Lightcap revealed that OpenAI might be the most active user of Slack among organizations globally. Lightcap emphasized the importance of maintaining traditional workplace tools even as the AI industry evolves. He mentioned that while many companies are transitioning to new methods of communication, OpenAI continues to rely on proven platforms like Slack and Salesforce, the latter having acquired Slack for $27.7 billion in 2020. As OpenAI explores new frontiers in AI, including a recent rollout of workplace tools designed to enhance productivity, the company remains committed to its foundational software-as-a-service (SaaS) systems. Lightcap stated, "We utilize almost all the major SaaS platforms that come to mind. These systems are critical for OpenAI's operations and will remain essential for the foreseeable future." Former OpenAI engineer Calvin French-Owen also highlighted the company's unique operational approach, noting a significant preference for Slack over email. He remarked, "Everything runs on Slack. I received maybe ten emails during my entire time there." This reliance on Slack raises questions about the role AI plays in these communication systems. Lightcap suggested that AI can effectively enhance existing workflows, helping teams work more efficiently within their established frameworks.
