Sam Altman warns ChatGPT users of ‘capacity crunches’ as GPT-5 launch nears

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has reached out to users of ChatGPT, asking for their understanding as the company prepares for several significant feature launches and model updates. He cautioned that these upcoming changes could result in some temporary disruptions or capacity issues. While Altman did not specify the exact models involved, it has been previously revealed that OpenAI is on the verge of launching its highly anticipated GPT-5 model. Additionally, they are set to unveil their first-ever open-weights model this month. In a recent post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Altman expressed excitement about the forthcoming releases, stating, "We have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months—new models, products, features, and more. Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. Although it may be slightly choppy, we think you'll really love what we've created for you!" Reports suggest that OpenAI could potentially roll out the GPT-5 model as early as August. This new model is expected to be a groundbreaking advancement in language models, offering unified reasoning capabilities. Users will no longer need to choose between reasoning models for more complex tasks, as GPT-5 will integrate the capabilities of both the o series and GPT series models, adeptly determining when to engage in deeper reasoning. In a recent podcast, Altman shared an anecdote about his experience testing GPT-5. He recounted how the model helped him navigate a challenging email question that he struggled to comprehend. "I put it in the model, and it answered perfectly. I really kind of sat back in my chair and had an 'oh man, here it is' moment," he said. He acknowledged feeling somewhat inadequate compared to the AI's performance. Altman previously indicated that users on the free tier will enjoy unlimited chats at a standard intelligence level with GPT-5. Meanwhile, Plus subscribers will benefit from enhanced capabilities, allowing them to operate GPT-5 at a higher intelligence setting, and Pro subscribers will access the model at an even greater level of intelligence. Stay tuned for more technology news and updates as OpenAI continues to innovate in the AI landscape.
