Sam Altman warns against using ChatGPT as your lawyer or therapist

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has expressed serious concerns about the risks of sharing personal information with AI systems, particularly in the absence of robust privacy protections. With an increasing number of young users turning to AI chatbots for advice on relationships, life choices, and legal matters, Altman warns that these interactions lack the confidentiality afforded by traditional human professionals. During a recent podcast episode with Theo Von, Altman highlighted a critical distinction between conversations with human lawyers or therapists—where privileged communication is protected—and those with AI platforms like ChatGPT or Gemini. He emphasized that while professional confidentiality exists for human practitioners, similar safeguards do not currently apply to interactions with AI. Altman stated, "People are sharing deeply personal issues with ChatGPT, treating it as a source of therapy or life coaching. However, if someone were to discuss sensitive matters with ChatGPT and subsequently face legal action, there is no guarantee that those conversations would remain private. This is a significant concern that we need to address." He further emphasized the urgency of establishing a legal framework that would protect users' privacy when they interact with AI. Altman noted a growing recognition among lawmakers regarding the necessity for such legal protections, asserting, "The policymakers I've engaged with largely agree that we need to tackle this issue promptly." As the dialogue around AI technology evolves, the need for clear regulations and privacy standards becomes increasingly apparent, raising questions about the future of AI interaction and user protection.
