Sam Altman says GPT-5's 'personality' will get a revamp — but it won't be as 'annoying' as GPT-4o

In response to user feedback, OpenAI is actively refining GPT-5's personality to create a more engaging experience. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed on X that the upcoming update aims to make GPT-5 "warmer" than its predecessor, GPT-4o, while ensuring it is "not as annoying (to most users)." This adjustment comes after some users expressed nostalgia for the more agreeable tone of GPT-4o. Users now have the option to choose between three modes for GPT-5: 'Auto,' 'Fast,' and 'Thinking.' Altman noted that while most will likely prefer the Auto setting, the other options will offer tailored experiences for those who seek different interactions. Additionally, GPT-4o has been reinstated for paid subscribers, allowing users to select their preferred model once again. The launch of GPT-5 had previously sparked complaints as many users found the new model's tone less helpful and missed the emotional connection offered by GPT-4o. On social media platforms like Reddit, some users lamented the loss of their "AI friend," describing their emotional attachment to the previous version. Altman addressed these concerns during a Reddit Q&A, acknowledging the strong emotional ties users had developed with GPT-4o. He admitted that OpenAI underestimated the significance of certain traits users appreciated in the older model, despite GPT-5's technical advancements. "Users have very different needs—some crave cold logic, while others seek warmth and a different kind of emotional intelligence," he stated. Reflecting on the feedback, Altman emphasized the importance of customization in AI personalities, indicating that OpenAI is committed to enhancing user experiences without compromising healthy usage. He noted that the emotional connections users form with AI models are notably intense and distinct from previous technologies, leading to a reconsideration of how new models are introduced. As OpenAI continues to listen to its users, it aims to strike a balance between innovation and the emotional needs of its audience, ensuring that new iterations of AI resonate effectively with their users.
