GPT-5 launch: Sam Altman says India could soon overtake US as OpenAI’s biggest market

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has expressed his belief that India may soon rise to become the company's largest market, surpassing the United States. He noted, "India is our second-largest market in the world after the US, and it may well become our largest market. The speed of growth here is impressive, and the innovative ways users are engaging with AI are truly remarkable." OpenAI unveiled GPT-5, its most advanced AI model to date, designed for programming and executing autonomous tasks. This new model comes in three iterations: gpt-5, gpt-5-mini, and gpt-5-nano, allowing developers to choose the version that best suits their needs for speed, efficiency, or cost. Altman emphasized the company's commitment to India, stating, "We’re especially focused on bringing products to India, collaborating with local partners to enhance the effectiveness and affordability of AI for people across the country. We have been closely monitoring the rapid growth in this market and I’m eager to visit in September." GPT-5 is branded as "more intelligent, quicker, and highly practical," marking a significant advancement for ChatGPT. According to Altman, the model's capabilities can provide insights comparable to those of a PhD holder. It excels in areas such as programming, mathematics, writing, healthcare, and visual interpretation, adapting its responses based on the complexity or urgency of user queries. The rollout of GPT-5 includes all user tiers — Free, Plus, Pro, and Team — ensuring that even those using the free version of ChatGPT will benefit from the upgrade. Enterprise and educational customers can expect to receive the new features within a week.
