OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to meet with lawmakers, Trump officials in D.C.

In a significant move for the artificial intelligence sector, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is set to engage with lawmakers in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday. This meeting comes in the wake of an executive order on AI signed by former President Donald Trump earlier this week. Altman’s agenda includes discussions with members of the Trump administration at the White House, as confirmed by an OpenAI representative. He is also scheduled to meet with prominent figures from both sides of the aisle, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). The executive order mandates that AI companies voluntarily grant government access to their models for a period of up to 30 days prior to public release. While the order lacks detailed specifications, leading executives in the AI field, including Altman, have expressed their approval on social media platforms. "The U.S. should lead on AI by continuing to develop the very best models, ensuring they are safe, and equipping trusted defenders with cyber tools," Altman posted on X. He also commented that the new executive order strikes an appropriate balance. OpenAI has played a pivotal role in the AI revolution, particularly with the introduction of its chatbot ChatGPT in 2022. Altman has routinely visited Capitol Hill to discuss AI policy, including a meeting this past March after OpenAI's controversial partnership with the Pentagon. Notably, he was also present at Trump's inauguration last year. On Monday, OpenAI released a blog post outlining its stance on AI policy and political engagement, clarifying that the company has not contributed to any political candidates or campaigns. Furthermore, OpenAI stated it has not established employee-funded Political Action Committees or supported existing PACs aimed at influencing public perception of AI. The company reaffirmed its commitment to advocate for AI policies in a transparent manner, emphasizing the importance of thoughtful regulation, rigorous testing of AI systems, strong safety protocols, public accountability, and equitable access to AI advancements.
