Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has cautioned ChatGPT users to brace for potential "hiccups" and "capacity issues" as the company gears up to introduce an array of new products and features in the upcoming months. In a recent update on social media platform X, Altman stated, "We have a ton of stuff to launch over the next couple of months – new models, products, features, and more. Please bear with us through some probable hiccups and capacity crunches. Although it may be slightly choppy, we think you’ll really love what we’ve created for you!" While Altman refrained from detailing specific models, there are widespread expectations that OpenAI will unveil GPT-5 in early August. This next-generation model is anticipated to be the company's first large language model capable of unified reasoning, enabling users to avoid the manual selection of reasoning models for complex tasks. Additionally, OpenAI is set to release its inaugural open-weights model this month, further expanding its offerings. GPT-5 is designed to autonomously identify when extended reasoning is necessary, showcasing a leap in AI capabilities. Altman shared a personal anecdote during an interview with The Verge, reflecting on the model's prowess: "I was testing our new model and I received a question that I didn’t quite understand. I inputted it into the model, and GPT-5 answered it flawlessly. I really sat back in my chair, astonished. I felt somewhat inadequate compared to the AI, which handled it effortlessly." Earlier in the year, Altman confirmed that GPT-5 would be accessible to all ChatGPT free-tier users, allowing for unlimited conversations at a standard intelligence level. Meanwhile, ChatGPT Plus subscribers will enjoy access at a higher intelligence tier, while Pro users will experience it at an even more advanced level.
