AI will not replace 'human part' of employment says OpenAI CEO Sam Altman

As layoffs surge and companies restructure globally, concerns over job loss due to artificial intelligence (AI) advancements are rising. However, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, reassured attendees at a Commonwealth Bank of Australia conference that AI is unlikely to cause an impending 'jobs apocalypse.' During a virtual discussion with Matt Comyn, CEO of BA, Altman expressed that while he initially feared AI would significantly displace white-collar jobs, he has come to recognize the technology's positive contributions. "I'm delighted to be wrong about this," he stated, admitting he expected a greater impact on entry-level positions, which has not materialized. Although Altman acknowledged that AI is indeed being integrated into various companies, including Meta and Amazon, he emphasized that it cannot replace the essential human element in many jobs. He articulated the importance of human interaction in roles that technology cannot fulfill. "The jobs landscape is likely to look very different than we anticipated," he remarked. Furthermore, he dismissed the notion of a catastrophic job loss scenario that some tech industry leaders warn about. In contrast, Chris Olah, co-founder of Anthropic, pointed out that AI could indeed lead to significant employee displacement. This juxtaposition highlights the ongoing debate about AI's impact on the workforce, especially amid a wave of layoffs and increased automation in multiple sectors. The uncertainty surrounding job security and the future of work continues to be a pressing concern as generative AI tools gain traction.
