OpenAI's head of sales leaves for role at Thrive Capital

James Dyett, the head of sales at OpenAI, has announced his departure from the company, marking another significant exit within the rapidly evolving tech firm. Dyett joined OpenAI in 2023 during a period of remarkable growth that followed the successful launch of its ChatGPT chatbot. Under Dyett's leadership, OpenAI has seen its valuation soar to over $850 billion from private investors. He played a pivotal role in spearheading both enterprise and application programming interface (API) sales during his time at the company. In a post shared on X, he expressed his sentiments about leaving, stating, "The timing feels right. I'm drawn back to the early stages of company building, and OpenAI is in a strong place." Dyett's exit follows a series of leadership transitions at OpenAI in recent months. Notably, Fidji Simo, the chief of product and business, announced her medical leave due to a worsening neuroimmune condition. Additionally, Kate Rouch, who led marketing efforts, stepped down to concentrate on her cancer recovery, and Brad Lightcap, the operating chief, shifted to a role dedicated to "special projects." Further compounding these changes, Bill Peebles, who oversaw the now-defunct Sora short-form video app, and Kevin Weil, the vice president of science at OpenAI, have also recently departed from their positions. Dyett is set to join Thrive Capital, a venture capital firm recognized for its long-standing support of OpenAI. In his new role as an Operator in Residence, he will work closely with the firm’s founder, Joshua Kushner, who shares a strong rapport with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. "I've been fortunate to work at Thrive-backed companies over the past decade—first Stripe, then OpenAI—and have experienced firsthand their commitment to their companies," Dyett remarked. "I'm excited to pay that forward to founders across the portfolio and stay close to building."
