Did Sam Altman just announce an OpenAI cloud service?

In a recent statement, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman clarified some misconceptions circulating on social media, hinting at a significant new venture for the company. Altman revealed, "We are also looking at ways to more directly sell compute capacity to other companies (and people); we are pretty sure the world is going to need a lot of 'AI cloud', and we are excited to offer this," suggesting that OpenAI may be considering establishing itself as a cloud service provider. This potential shift puts OpenAI in direct competition with established cloud giants such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, and Google Cloud Platform. It's a notable departure from the company's typical discourse, with Altman’s comments indicating a clear intent to build a business model around cloud computing. In September, OpenAI CFO Sarah Friar hinted at similar plans, cautioning that cloud providers have been "learning on our dime" and expressing a desire to protect OpenAI's AI innovations from being leveraged by larger tech companies. Furthermore, Altman addressed a critical issue facing the company: how to fund the extensive $1 trillion infrastructure deals recently signed. Establishing a cloud service could provide a lucrative avenue for recouping investments by renting out computing resources to other businesses, making it a strategic move in an industry where cloud services yield substantial profits. Investors are currently optimistic about established cloud providers like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google due to their robust business models. In contrast, companies without a cloud service, like Meta, face uncertainty regarding their substantial investments in data centers and technology. Meta's recent struggles highlight the risks associated with lacking a clear monetization strategy for such investments. For OpenAI, launching a comprehensive cloud service could alleviate some investor concerns regarding return on investment in AI technologies, positioning the company as a formidable player in the cloud computing landscape.
