OpenAI's Pentagon AI deal triggers 295% surge in ChatGPT uninstalls

OpenAI's recent agreement with the Pentagon has provoked a significant backlash, resulting in an astonishing 295% increase in uninstalls of the ChatGPT application. This spike in user withdrawals reveals a growing dissatisfaction with the company's choice to provide artificial intelligence technologies for military applications. Market research firm Sensor Tower reported that the rate of uninstalls in the U.S. soared on February 28, a notable jump compared to the app's regular monthly uninstall rate of around 9% daily. Furthermore, there was a 13% decline in downloads of ChatGPT on the same day, followed by an additional 5% drop on March 1. In stark contrast, Anthropic’s Claude AI saw an influx of users, with a 51% increase on February 28, making it the top-ranked app in the productivity category on the U.S. App Store. This surge coincided with Anthropic’s public refusal to meet the Pentagon’s demands for collaboration. User sentiment towards ChatGPT has also shifted dramatically, with one-star reviews skyrocketing by 775% on the day of the announcement, while five-star ratings plummeted by 50%. The backlash has fueled a growing “Cancel ChatGPT” movement across various social media platforms, where users are not only uninstalling the app but also canceling their paid subscriptions. Many have been sharing their cancellation screenshots on platforms like Reddit and X (formerly Twitter), urging others to consider alternative AI options, with Claude AI being frequently suggested. In light of the considerable public outcry and user departures, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman addressed the situation, seeking to clarify the terms of the partnership with the U.S. Department of War. In a post on X, he assured users that the AI systems would not be utilized for mass surveillance in the U.S. and confirmed that deployment to military intelligence agencies would be off-limits. He cited the Fourth Amendment and other legislative measures, reassuring users that the company would prohibit any deliberate tracking or monitoring of U.S. citizens. Altman emphasized that any service modifications involving military intelligence agencies would require a substantial amendment to OpenAI's contract.
