OpenAI says nonprofit parent will own equity stake in company of over $100 billion

OpenAI revealed on Thursday that its nonprofit parent organization will maintain oversight of the company while holding an equity stake valued at over $100 billion. The artificial intelligence startup, which recently achieved a valuation of $500 billion, emphasized that this structure positions the nonprofit to become one of the most financially empowered philanthropic entities globally, facilitating ongoing capital acquisition. In a significant development, OpenAI announced a non-binding memorandum of understanding with Microsoft, outlining the future direction of their collaboration. Microsoft has invested more than $13 billion in OpenAI, beginning its support in 2019, prior to the introduction of the ChatGPT chatbot. In a joint statement with Microsoft, OpenAI expressed its commitment to finalizing contractual details in a definitive agreement, underscoring their shared goal of delivering top-tier AI tools while prioritizing safety. Earlier this year, OpenAI responded to calls from civic leaders and former employees by affirming that the nonprofit would retain control during its transition to a public benefit corporation. Founded in 2015 as a nonprofit research lab, OpenAI has rapidly evolved into one of the most dynamic commercial entities in the tech landscape. The company is currently collaborating with the Attorneys General of California and Delaware to define its operational framework. "OpenAI started as a nonprofit, remains one today, and will continue to be one – with the nonprofit holding the authority that guides our future," stated Chairman Bret Taylor on Thursday. This announcement comes amidst a contentious legal dispute with Elon Musk, a co-founder of OpenAI, who is striving to prevent the company from shifting into a for-profit model as he develops his own generative AI startup, xAI. This is a developing story, and updates will follow.
