Altman describes OpenAI’s forthcoming AI device as more peaceful and calm than the iPhone

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman anticipates a surprising reaction from the public when they first encounter the company’s upcoming AI hardware. Describing it as deceptively simple, he expects many to exclaim, 'That’s it?' This innovative device is the result of a collaboration with Jony Ive, the renowned former chief designer at Apple. Details about the product remain scarce, but it is rumored to be pocket-sized and devoid of a traditional screen. Earlier this year, OpenAI acquired Ive's design startup, io, with the goal of making AI technology accessible through user-friendly gadgets. During a recent interview at Emerson Collective’s 9th annual Demo Day in San Francisco, Altman and Ive elaborated on their vision for the device. While specifics are under wraps as the device is still in prototype form, Altman emphasized the need for a product that fosters tranquility in a world filled with distractions. He compared the experience of using current technology to navigating the chaos of Times Square, where constant notifications and social media can be overwhelming. Altman believes that today’s devices fail to promote peace and focus, stating, 'It’s not making any of our lives peaceful and calm.' In contrast, the vibe of the new AI device is designed to evoke a sense of serenity, akin to enjoying a tranquil moment by a serene lake in the mountains. Altman envisions a device that intelligently filters information, allowing users to trust the AI to manage tasks over time, providing contextual awareness to enhance their daily lives. Ive confirmed that the device is expected to launch within the next two years, emphasizing his passion for designs that appear almost naive in their simplicity, yet are sophisticated and intuitive. 'They’re just tools you want to use almost without thought,' he remarked, highlighting the goal of making technology feel less intimidating and more user-friendly.
