I'm trying really, really hard to be excited about the secretive new OpenAI device. But I just can't do it.

As a gadget enthusiast, I typically welcome the opportunity to explore new technology that promises to enhance daily life. However, the lack of clarity surrounding this particular device leaves me questioning its necessity. Details about the device remain shrouded in secrecy. We know that renowned former Apple designer Jony Ive is involved in its development, which certainly adds an element of intrigue. Predictions about its potential features range from a compact, iPod Shuffle-like gadget to an innovative wearable that acts as a personal companion. In a recent discussion with Laurene Powell Jobs, Sam Altman and Ive hinted that the device is expected to launch in about two years, but specifics about its functionality remain elusive. One prevailing theory suggests that the device may serve as a voice-activated assistant, akin to a compact speaker that utilizes ChatGPT technology. However, this concept raises concerns, as there are already numerous devices that serve similar functions. For instance, the AI Pin, a small wearable that offered AI-driven insights, faced a rocky launch due to performance issues and negative feedback. Many users expressed discomfort with the idea of talking to a device in public spaces, which may limit its practicality. Another recent example is the Friend necklace, designed to engage users in conversation as an AI companion. Despite a significant marketing push, it received backlash for its perceived dystopian implications and also struggled with functionality issues, leading to disappointing reviews. While there are more straightforward AI devices like the Plaud Note, which assists with note-taking during meetings or lectures, these solutions don’t fully capture my interest. As someone who values privacy, I find the idea of recording conversations with AI unsettling. Though I appreciate my Alexa for its utility, I’m hesitant to expand my reliance on voice-activated assistants. As we await the launch of OpenAI's device, I remain cautiously optimistic that it will surprise us with groundbreaking features.
