OpenAI requested memorial attendee list in ChatGPT suicide lawsuit

OpenAI is facing scrutiny as it seeks a complete list of attendees from the memorial of Adam Raine, a 16-year-old who tragically took his own life after engaging with ChatGPT. The request, reportedly made to the Raine family, suggests that the tech company may be considering subpoenaing friends and family members involved, raising concerns about the potential implications of this move. According to documents reviewed by the Financial Times, OpenAI has also requested various materials related to memorial events for Adam, including videos, photographs, and eulogies. This has led the Raine family’s legal representatives to describe the company's actions as "intentional harassment." This development follows the family's recent updates to their wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI, initially filed in August. They allege that Adam's conversations with the AI about his mental health and suicidal thoughts were contributing factors in his tragic decision. The lawsuit contends that OpenAI expedited the release of GPT-4o in May 2024, compromising safety testing in the face of competitive pressures. Additionally, the family claims that in February 2025, OpenAI weakened its safeguards by removing suicide prevention from its content restrictions, merely advising the AI to exercise caution in sensitive situations. They point to a dramatic increase in Adam's use of ChatGPT, escalating from dozens of interactions daily, with a small percentage including self-harm discussions, to 300 interactions in April, the month of his death, with a significant rise in concerning content. OpenAI has responded to the updated lawsuit by emphasizing its commitment to teen wellbeing, asserting that minors should have robust protections, especially during vulnerable periods. The company highlighted existing safeguards, such as directing users to crisis hotlines and rerouting sensitive discussions to safer AI models. Recently, OpenAI has begun implementing a new safety routing system alongside parental controls for ChatGPT, aimed at enhancing user safety by directing emotionally charged conversations to its latest model, GPT-5, which is designed to mitigate risks associated with sensitive topics. TechCrunch has reached out for comments from both OpenAI and the attorney representing the Raine family as this case continues to unfold.
