Fidji Simo, the CEO of applications at OpenAI, has announced that she will be taking an extended medical leave due to a deteriorating neuroimmune condition. This announcement came alongside significant leadership changes within the company. Simo, who joined OpenAI in May, disclosed in a memo to staff that her health had worsened prior to her taking on the role. In her message, Simo described the past month as especially difficult for her health, leading her to the decision to take several weeks off to focus on recovery. She acknowledged that her dedication to the job had led her to delay medical tests and new treatment options. "For my entire time here, I've postponed medical tests and new therapies to stay completely focused on the job and not miss a single day of work," she stated. This realization prompted her to recognize the need for new interventions to stabilize her condition. During Simo's absence, OpenAI President Greg Brockman will step in to oversee product management. Additionally, Brad Lightcap, the company’s chief operating officer, will shift to a new role concentrating on special projects, reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the strength of their leadership team, emphasizing their commitment to advancing research and expanding their user base, which is nearing 1 billion users. They expressed confidence in maintaining continuity and momentum during this transition.
