Sam Altman says OpenAI is delaying its open-weight model — again

Eager developers hoping to experiment with ChatGPT's upcoming open-weight model will face yet another delay. In a recent post on X, OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, announced that the company would postpone the model's launch to conduct additional safety evaluations. Initially slated for release next week, the timeline for the open-weight model is now uncertain. Altman emphasized the need for more thorough safety checks, stating, "We need time to run additional safety tests and review high-risk areas. We are not yet sure how long it will take us." Altman originally indicated back in March that the open-weight model would be available "in the coming months." However, the target date shifted from June to a later summer release in mid-June. Now, developers can expect further delays as OpenAI navigates this intricate process. Altman reassured the community that the wait would be worthwhile, given the unexpected advancements made by the research team. This announcement marks the second delay within a month, highlighting the challenges OpenAI faces in ensuring the safety of its powerful AI models. Altman noted, "Once weights are out, they can't be pulled back," underscoring the importance of a careful release strategy. Open weights differ from standard open-source code, allowing developers to access the neural network's parameters for local fine-tuning while retaining some control over the model's deployment. This approach is seen as more flexible than a completely closed API, yet poses challenges in terms of future updates. The delay comes at a time when OpenAI's competitor, xAI, is dealing with its own safety issues. Reports surfaced that xAI's Grok chatbot had made inappropriate comments online, raising concerns about the implications of releasing advanced models without sufficient safeguards. Although OpenAI did not connect its situation to xAI's, the incident serves as a cautionary tale about the potential risks involved in launching powerful AI technologies. Despite the wait, developers remain optimistic about the impact an open-weight GPT-4-class system could have on the AI landscape, which is currently dominated by Meta's Llama series and various competitors from China. Until then, the community must exercise patience as OpenAI continues its rigorous safety processes.
