OpenAI has recently removed all mentions of its newly acquired hardware firm, io, from its website as it faces a trademark dispute initiated by iyO, a startup backed by Google that has been promoting its custom-molded earpieces as 'the world’s first audio computer.' Reports from MacRumors indicate that the legal conflict arose after iyO filed court documents claiming that both OpenAI and io were aware of its innovative in-ear computing device, even requesting a demonstration prior to io's market entry. The court filings reportedly include emails that iyO asserts demonstrate OpenAI's familiarity with its technology before launching its own hardware initiatives. OpenAI, which acquired io—co-founded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive—for approximately $6.5 billion, has yet to comment publicly on the trademark allegations. Earlier statements from OpenAI suggested that the acquisition could potentially enhance its business value by up to $1 trillion. In legal documents submitted on June 12, io's co-founder and former Apple hardware executive Tang Tan responded to the allegations, confirming that while the company did explore existing commercial products during its development phase, this involved researching over 30 different headphone and earbud models. Tan also clarified that io's first product is neither an in-ear nor a wearable device, countering previous predictions from tech analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that the device would be worn like a necklace. The anticipated product, as per the filings, is still at least a year away from being released to the public. Various media outlets have speculated that the AI-driven device will be compact, devoid of a screen, and equipped with contextual awareness capabilities to interpret a user's surroundings and experiences in real-time. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly referred to the prototype, which has undergone private testing, as 'the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.'
