What is POTS, the disorder that forced OpenAI exec Fidji Simo to take medical leave

OpenAI executive Fidji Simo has announced she will be temporarily stepping away from her role to focus on treating postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS). In a memo shared with OpenAI staff, the company confirmed her leave, which is expected to last several weeks as she pursues necessary medical care. Simo, who has been vocal about her health journey, was diagnosed with POTS in 2019 after an initial misdiagnosis that attributed her symptoms to fatigue from motherhood. In a previous interview, Simo described her experience, stating, "I was fainting constantly, I was feeling weak." POTS is a condition that affects the autonomic nervous system, which controls involuntary functions such as heart rate and blood pressure. According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, individuals with POTS often struggle with orthostatic intolerance, which leads to symptoms like dizziness and fainting when standing up. These symptoms can be alleviated by lying down. The condition is particularly prevalent among those aged 15 to 50, with a higher incidence in women. POTS can develop following significant life events, including pregnancy, surgery, or viral infections, as well as during puberty or after experiencing trauma. The National Institutes of Health notes that those with a family history of POTS may be at an increased risk of developing the disorder. Classic symptoms include a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, and fainting. Many affected individuals may also experience blurred vision, leg weakness, fatigue, and digestive problems. While some symptoms of POTS can improve over time, others may persist indefinitely. Diagnosis typically involves a thorough review of medical history and symptom discussion, alongside monitoring heart rate and blood pressure changes when moving from sitting or lying down to standing. Treatment for POTS generally focuses on managing blood flow and volume, with some medications offering temporary relief. Additionally, lifestyle adjustments like increased salt intake and proper hydration can help mitigate symptoms. Interestingly, researchers are exploring the link between long-term COVID-19 and POTS, as some individuals have reported developing POTS symptoms post-infection. The full implications of this connection are still under investigation, as some patients may also experience related anxiety, cognitive difficulties, and sleep disturbances.
