OpenAI COO says ‘we have not yet really seen AI penetrate enterprise business processes’

This month, OpenAI unveiled OpenAI Frontier, a new platform designed for enterprises to create and manage AI agents. However, according to OpenAI's Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, businesses have yet to fully embrace AI on a large scale. Speaking at the India AI summit in New Delhi, Lightcap remarked, "We have not yet really seen enterprise AI penetrate enterprise business processes." He emphasized the complexity of organizations where numerous teams work together, navigating intricate goals and utilizing various systems. Despite the buzz surrounding AI potentially revolutionizing business processes and claims that 'SaaS is dead,' Lightcap pointed out that such predictions have not materialized, noting that OpenAI heavily relied on traditional software like Slack in the past year. OpenAI's CFO, Sarah Friar, recently shared that the company's revenue is increasing, projecting over $20 billion in annualized revenue by the end of 2025. Lightcap acknowledged strong demand for their services but refrained from divulging specific figures, stating, "We almost always find ourselves having to manage too much demand." As OpenAI evaluates success in enterprise applications, Lightcap indicated that the firm plans to assess the impact of Frontier based on business outcomes rather than user licenses. He described Frontier as an opportunity to experiment with integrating AI into complex business environments, which could yield valuable insights about both enterprises and AI technology. Following discussions at the summit, OpenAI has partnered with prominent consulting firms like Boston Consulting Group, McKinsey, Accenture, and Capgemini to enhance its enterprise initiatives. Meanwhile, competitor Anthropic has introduced plugins targeting finance and engineering sectors for AI agent development. Lightcap also mentioned OpenAI's recent acquisition of the open-source tool OpenClaw, which offers a glimpse into a future where AI agents could perform a wide array of tasks on computers. In terms of market presence, OpenAI identified India as its second-largest user base for ChatGPT, boasting over 100 million weekly users. He highlighted the growing importance of voice technology in India, which is helping to broaden access to AI for previously underserved populations. OpenAI is set to expand its footprint in India with new offices in Mumbai and Bengaluru, primarily for sales and marketing efforts. When asked about the inclusion of technical talent in these offices, Lightcap replied, "Never say never." Concerns regarding job displacement due to AI, especially in India’s significant IT services and BPO sector, have emerged. Recent weeks have seen declines in Indian IT stock prices as the market adapts to the possibility of reduced human involvement in areas like coding. Lightcap acknowledged the ongoing shifts in the job market, stating, "Our view is that over time, jobs will change. We don’t yet know where, how, or what, but it seems inevitable that work will look different in the future than it looks today. This is a natural part of the business cycle and the dynamic economy we live in. We must remain empathetic to the changes occurring in the job landscape."
