OpenAI thinks Elon Musk funded its biggest critics—who also hate Musk

In a recent wave of criticism, OpenAI has come under fire for issuing subpoenas to various nonprofit organizations. These nonprofits have been accused of collaborating with Elon Musk to amplify negative sentiments towards OpenAI as it transitions from a nonprofit entity to a for-profit company. The subpoenas are intended to bolster OpenAI's defense in a lawsuit initiated by Musk's X Corp, which aims to halt the organization’s shift in structure. The requests seek a comprehensive range of documents, including all communications related to Musk and detailed information about the nonprofits’ funding sources and donations. OpenAI asserts that the aim is to determine whether Musk played a role in orchestrating the criticisms or financially supported the nonprofits in their endeavors. However, the targeted nonprofits argue that OpenAI's actions are nothing more than a strategy to intimidate and suppress dissenting voices. Emma Ruby-Sachs, the executive director of Ekō—a nonprofit committed to holding major corporations accountable—expressed her skepticism about the rationale behind the subpoenas. She stated that the premise for these legal actions is so absurd that it appears to be a mere tactic to intimidate organizations like hers into silence. Earlier this year, Ekō publicly demanded Musk's removal from his position as head of DOGE, even going so far as to display a billboard in Times Square featuring Musk with a crown, urging the public to contact Congress to express their discontent. Ruby-Sachs highlighted that Ekō is primarily funded by small donations from individuals, contradicting the narrative that they are beholden to larger interests. "We’ve run numerous campaigns against Musk in the past year," she confirmed, emphasizing the organization’s independence and commitment to its mission.
