Head of OpenAI's Codex explains the kind of email that gets his attention — and his advice to young engineers

In a recent episode of "The Twenty Minute VC" podcast, Alexander Embiricos, head of product development at OpenAI's Codex, discussed the influx of messages from aspiring engineers seeking job opportunities. He pointed out that a particular type of email captures his attention more than standard applications. Embiricos emphasized that there has never been a better time to be an engineer, given the remarkable tools available that enable significant productivity. He encouraged engineers to maintain a positive outlook and to focus on creating projects that showcase their initiative and creativity. "It's crucial for engineers to develop quality projects and share them," he advised. He explained that while his team receives numerous applications through various channels, it is the candidates who present intriguing ideas and links to their work that stand out. The competition for talent in the AI sector is fierce, according to Embiricos. Even a reputable organization like OpenAI invests considerable effort in attracting the right candidates. "Even we feel it; you don't just get whoever you want free," he remarked. As AI continues to disrupt the field of software engineering, especially among entry-level positions, the landscape is rapidly evolving. Despite predictions of job reductions in major tech companies due to the rise of AI-driven coding, firms like Anthropic remain actively hiring, showcasing the ongoing demand for skilled professionals in this dynamic industry.
