In a significant shift, OpenAI is preparing to introduce a less restrictive version of ChatGPT specifically for adult users, which will include access to erotic content. CEO Sam Altman shared this news on social media, stating that the company aims to embrace a principle of treating adult users with more autonomy. "Starting in December, we will implement more comprehensive age-gating and allow verified adults to access more content, including erotica," Altman announced. This change marks a departure from OpenAI's previous policy that largely banned such material in most circumstances. While the exact criteria for what qualifies as permissible erotica are yet to be clarified, this move signals a notable transformation in the company's content regulations. Altman explained that earlier versions of ChatGPT were intentionally restrictive to mitigate potential mental health risks among users. However, he acknowledged that this stringent approach diminished the chatbot's utility and enjoyment for many users who did not experience such issues. "Now that we have developed tools to better address mental health concerns, we believe we can safely relax these restrictions for the majority of cases," he added. The so-called "new tools" reference the recently implemented safety features and parental controls designed to protect younger users. While these safeguards for minors expand, Altman is looking to offer adults a more liberated experience with ChatGPT. Additionally, Altman mentioned that a new version of ChatGPT is on the horizon, set to launch in the coming weeks. This version will enable the chatbot to adopt various personalities, enhancing user interaction. "If you want your ChatGPT to respond in a more human-like manner or use emojis extensively, it will be able to do that—if that's what you desire," he stated. This announcement has garnered attention, particularly because Altman had previously indicated that ChatGPT would not include sexualized features, contrasting with offerings from competitors like xAI’s Grok. Amid increasing scrutiny of its safety protocols, OpenAI is also under investigation by the Federal Trade Commission concerning possible risks to minors, following a tragic lawsuit from a California family claiming that ChatGPT played a role in their son's suicide. To further address these concerns, OpenAI has established an eight-member expert council to focus on the implications of AI on user well-being, emphasizing the importance of defining healthy interactions with artificial intelligence.
