OpenAI is still working on that ‘super app’

OpenAI is gearing up to unveil an enhanced version of ChatGPT that aims to function as a comprehensive 'super app.' This innovative update, expected in the coming weeks, will integrate various coding tools and AI agents, as reported by the Financial Times. The primary objective behind this overhaul is to enhance OpenAI's competitiveness against rivals like Anthropic, particularly in the business sector, while also moving closer to profitability ahead of a potential initial public offering (IPO). The revamped ChatGPT will serve as a gateway, enticing free users to explore products they would be willing to pay for, including its coding product, Codex. A senior OpenAI employee was quoted in the report, stating, 'Chat is dead,' highlighting a shift in focus. Thibault Sottiaux, who heads the core product and platform at OpenAI, emphasized the vision of creating a personal agent designed to assist users with various aspects of their lives, both personally and professionally. This isn't the first time OpenAI's intentions for a super app have been discussed. Reports dating back to last year have indicated that the company is undergoing a significant strategic transformation. Following the introduction of several standalone products in 2025, OpenAI executives have decided to pivot away from what they refer to as 'side quests,' including the video generator Sora, to focus on this more integrated approach.
