OpenAI plans to build a desktop 'Superapp' combining ChatGPT, Codex app, and Browser

OpenAI is on the verge of a major innovation as it aims to consolidate its flagship products into a single desktop 'Superapp.' This ambitious project will bring together ChatGPT, Codex, and an AI-driven browser, creating a streamlined platform designed to enhance productivity for both engineering and business professionals. According to insights shared by The Wall Street Journal, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s Chief Executive of Applications, will lead the development of this Superapp. She will also oversee the sales team tasked with promoting this groundbreaking product. Meanwhile, OpenAI President Greg Brockman is set to manage the redesign of the product, guiding the team through essential technical and structural enhancements. Simo has publicly confirmed this initiative through a post on X (formerly Twitter), emphasizing the importance of focusing on successful ventures. "Companies go through phases of exploration and phases of refocus; both are critical. But when new bets start to work, like we're seeing now with Codex, it's very important to double down on them and avoid distractions. Really glad we're seizing this moment,” she stated. The planned Superapp aims to integrate OpenAI’s fundamental AI tools into a cohesive application, enhancing both resource utilization and operational efficiency. This platform is not just another AI chatbot; it aspires to feature agentic AI capable of executing sophisticated tasks directly on users' devices. This includes software development, data analysis, and task execution, potentially marking a significant evolution in consumer technology. In a memo to employees dated March 19, Simo noted that the company recognized its efforts were too fragmented across various applications, which hindered progress. "That fragmentation has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we want,” she remarked, stressing the need for a more focused approach as they move forward with this innovative project.
