Sam Altman says OpenAI will top $20B in annualized revenue this year, hundreds of billions by 2030

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, announced on Thursday that the company is poised to exceed $20 billion in annual revenue for this year. Looking ahead, he emphasized plans to escalate sales to hundreds of billions by 2030. This ambitious forecast comes as OpenAI has secured over $1.4 trillion in infrastructure contracts recently, aiming to expand its data centers to meet the surging demand for its AI technologies. Altman highlighted the necessity of building infrastructure for an AI-driven economy, stating, "Given everything we see on the horizon in our research program, this is the time to invest to really scale up our technology." He acknowledged the long timelines associated with such massive infrastructure projects, indicating the urgency to begin now. Originally established as a nonprofit research organization in 2015, OpenAI has rapidly transformed into one of the most dynamic commercial companies in the world since the debut of its chatbot, ChatGPT, in 2022. Currently valued at $500 billion, OpenAI is still on the path to profitability. In a recent statement, CFO Sarah Friar projected that the company would generate around $13 billion in revenue this year. Friar made headlines earlier this week after suggesting that OpenAI is exploring the creation of an ecosystem involving banks and private equity, along with a potential federal support system to finance investments in advanced chips. However, she later clarified her comments, emphasizing that OpenAI is not seeking government backing for its infrastructure projects. "I used the word 'backstop' and it muddied the point," she explained on LinkedIn, stressing the importance of collaboration between the private sector and government to bolster American technological strength. In response to Friar's comments, venture capitalist David Sacks, who is involved with the Trump administration's AI initiatives, asserted that there would be "no federal bailout for AI." He expressed confidence that if one AI company falters, another will emerge to take its place. Altman reiterated that OpenAI does not desire government guarantees for its data centers, affirming that any mistakes made would be the company’s responsibility. "This is the bet we are making, and given our vantage point, we feel good about it," he stated, acknowledging the inherent risks involved. As the dialogue around AI and government involvement continues, OpenAI remains focused on its ambitious goals and the development of its infrastructure to support future growth.
