OpenAI is reportedly gearing up to challenge Apple's AirPods with a new AI-driven earbuds project, codenamed 'Sweetpea.' According to insider information shared by tipster Smart Pikachu on social media platform X, this innovative device is being developed in collaboration with design guru Jony Ive. The plans suggest that OpenAI has instructed manufacturing partner Foxconn to prepare five different devices, expected to launch by the fourth quarter of 2028. These devices might include a home assistant and a stylus, but 'Sweetpea' is currently the highlight of the lineup, benefiting from Ive's design expertise. Set to debut in September 2028, 'Sweetpea' is projected to achieve sales of 40 to 50 million units. The design is described as 'unique' and inspired by the shape of an egg stone. Speculations indicate that it could be powered by a 2nm chip, potentially sourced from Samsung’s Exynos range, and may feature a custom chip that can execute commands similar to Siri. In previous remarks, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned that this new AI device would serve as a 'third device,' enhancing smartphone functionalities rather than replacing them. Additionally, Bloomberg had hinted at the possibility of the device being equipped with cameras and microphones to enable a heightened awareness of the user's surroundings. During a discussion with Emerson Collective last year, both Ive and Altman confirmed their collaboration on several hardware projects, with expectations of launching AI-powered devices within the next two years, suggesting a potential 2027 release date. Altman expressed enthusiasm about the prototypes already in development, stating, 'We have the first prototypes. I can’t believe how jaw-dropping good the work is and how exciting it is.' Ive elaborated on the design philosophy behind the products, emphasizing a balance between simplicity and sophistication, aiming to create devices that feel intuitive and inviting to use. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting venture into the future of technology.
