OpenAI is making significant strides to enhance its influence in India, a crucial market for its flagship product, ChatGPT. With its vast and youthful population, India has become a focal point for many U.S. tech giants, including Google and Meta, over recent years. During his visit to India in February, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman met with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to explore opportunities for collaboration. Altman highlighted that India ranks as OpenAI's second-largest user base, expressing enthusiasm for the rapid growth of AI adoption in the country. "Witnessing the surge of creativity in India has been remarkable," Altman shared on X earlier this year, noting that the nation is outpacing global trends. According to Nick Patience from Futurum Group, OpenAI's emphasis on India is a tactical move to solidify its competitive position in the global AI landscape. The growth of ChatGPT in India is particularly noteworthy; the app recorded 10.2 million downloads in August, sharply up from 2.5 million in the same month last year, as reported by Appfigures. Cumulatively, ChatGPT has amassed 111 million downloads in India, surpassing the 80 million downloads in the U.S. While download figures do not directly correlate to active users, they underscore OpenAI's upward trajectory within the Indian market. The app has outpaced competitors like Google's Gemini and Anthropic's Claude, with Perplexity being the closest rival, achieving 6.4 million downloads in August. User spending on ChatGPT has also seen an increase, with Indian users contributing $21.3 million to date, in stark contrast to the $784 million spent by users in the U.S. This discrepancy highlights the price-sensitive nature of the Indian market. To cater to this demographic, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go in August, a budget-friendly subscription plan priced at 399 rupees (approximately $4.53) per month. Patience described this pricing strategy as a classic wedge approach aimed at establishing a strong user base that could deter local competition in the future. In line with its expansion, OpenAI is reportedly in search of a site in India for a data center capable of supporting at least 1 gigawatt of capacity. This facility is expected to be part of OpenAI’s Stargate infrastructure initiative. Furthermore, the company announced plans to establish a local office in India and is actively recruiting for three sales positions. In addition, OpenAI unveiled an educational initiative that will provide funding for research and distribute half a million ChatGPT licenses to educators and students nationwide. Despite the lack of a home-grown AI company of OpenAI's stature in India, several domestic startups, such as Sarvam AI and Krutrim, along with larger tech firms like Google and Meta, present competition. However, ongoing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and India regarding trade could complicate matters for American tech entities. OpenAI is also facing legal challenges in India, having been accused by Asian News International of unlawfully using copyrighted material, a case that is garnering attention for its implications on copyright law in the AI sector. As Patience noted, OpenAI's success in India hinges on its ability to effectively navigate these legal and political landscapes. The diverse linguistic and user requirements of the Indian market further complicate matters, leaving the company's success and its long-term influence on India’s AI talent landscape uncertain.
