In a remarkable achievement, OpenAI's fledgling advertising initiative has rapidly exceeded $100 million in annual recurring revenue, just two months after its launch in the United States. A spokesperson for the artificial intelligence company confirmed this significant milestone, highlighting the rapid uptake of the service among users. Initially announced in January, OpenAI's strategy involved testing ads with both free users and subscribers of ChatGPT Go, aiming to tap into a potentially lucrative revenue stream. This move faced criticism from competitors like Anthropic, who humorously spotlighted OpenAI's advertising strategy in their Super Bowl campaign. Currently, OpenAI collaborates with over 600 advertisers while maintaining that privacy-related trust metrics have remained unaffected. The company is also looking to expand its testing to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. According to the guidelines shared in January, ads will be displayed at the bottom of ChatGPT responses, clearly labeled, and will not alter the chatbot's replies. Notably, users under 18 years old will not encounter any advertisements, and ads will be omitted from sensitive topics such as politics and health. Approximately 85% of OpenAI's U.S. users on the free and Go plans are eligible to view ads, yet less than 20% actually see them daily, as reported by the spokesperson. Despite the promising initial results, some advertisers have expressed concerns regarding the slow and cautious rollout of the program, which OpenAI has stated is a deliberate approach to refine the user experience before a broader release. They remain optimistic, citing positive early feedback from both users and advertisers.
