In a notable move within the tech industry, OpenAI has announced the addition of the team behind Alex Codes, an innovative tool that integrates AI models into Apple's Xcode development environment. This acquisition marks a significant step for OpenAI's Codex division, which is dedicated to advancing AI-driven coding solutions. Daniel Edrisian, the founder of Alex Codes, shared the news on social media, revealing that his team will contribute their expertise to enhance OpenAI's AI coding agent. Founded in 2024 and supported by Y-Combinator, Alex Codes aimed to incorporate AI functionalities into Xcode. This development comes on the heels of Apple's recent update that allows developers to access ChatGPT and other AI tools directly within Xcode, raising questions about the future of Alex Codes. Edrisian reflected on the ambitious journey of creating a 'Cursor for Xcode,' highlighting how the endeavor initially seemed far-fetched but ultimately resulted in a leading coding assistant for iOS and MacOS applications. Despite this transition, Alex Codes will continue to support its current users, although the app will no longer be available for download after October 1. The team has committed to maintaining the existing product without introducing new features, ensuring continued service for existing users. The startup's Y-Combinator profile indicates that it had a small team of three dedicated individuals working on the coding tool. However, it's unclear whether all team members will be joining OpenAI. As of now, OpenAI has not provided further comments on the acquisition, but this is not the first time the company has opted for an acqui-hire strategy, having previously acquired teams without purchasing entire companies. Just this week, OpenAI announced its acquisition of Statsig, a product testing startup, for $1.1 billion.
