OpenAI vs LinkedIn: ChatGPT maker announces AI-powered hiring platform

OpenAI is set to broaden its scope beyond the ChatGPT application with the introduction of a new hiring platform aimed at connecting businesses with potential employees. This strategic move positions OpenAI to compete directly with LinkedIn, a dominant player in the employment sector. The forthcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform, expected to launch by mid-2026, was highlighted in a recent blog post by Fidji Simo, the CEO of Applications at OpenAI. The platform is designed to leverage artificial intelligence to facilitate optimal matches between the needs of companies and the skills offered by job seekers. In a departure from conventional job boards, this service will also support small businesses and local governments, providing them with AI-enhanced recruitment tools. This initiative marks a significant step in OpenAI's efforts to diversify its product offerings. CEO Sam Altman has noted that Simo will spearhead several new projects beyond the chatbot, which may include a web browser and a social networking platform. The entry into the recruitment sector could ignite competition with LinkedIn, especially as the latter has been incorporating AI functionalities to benefit both job candidates and employers. Adding an interesting twist, LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman was one of the early investors in OpenAI, and Microsoft, which is OpenAI's largest backer, also owns LinkedIn. In addition to the job platform, OpenAI is launching OpenAI Certifications through its educational hub, OpenAI Academy. This program, which already boasts over two million users, will allow individuals to showcase their proficiency in AI—from basic workplace skills to advanced competencies like prompt engineering. Participants will be able to prepare for and take certification exams within ChatGPT, and employers will have the flexibility to integrate this system into their training programs. A pilot for the certification initiative is anticipated in late 2025, with OpenAI aiming to certify 10 million Americans by the year 2030. This undertaking is part of the company’s partnership with the White House to enhance AI literacy in the workforce. While there are ongoing concerns regarding the potential for AI to replace numerous white-collar jobs, OpenAI asserts that its initiatives will help workers navigate the evolving job landscape. "We can’t prevent disruption," Simo stated in her announcement, "but we can play our part in ensuring that people are equipped to excel in the age of AI."
