OpenAI taps Apple supply chain, plans to launch first ChatGPT-powered device

OpenAI is making significant strides in the hardware space following its acquisition of the AI startup io, founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive. Although specific details about their collaboration remain scarce, speculation is rife about a new line of hardware products powered by ChatGPT. According to a recent report by The Information, OpenAI has begun to attract top hardware talent from Apple, prompting concerns within the tech giant. In response to these recruitment efforts, Apple has even canceled its annual offsite meeting for select members of its U.S. and China supply chain teams. Tang Tan, OpenAI's chief hardware officer and a former head of product design at Apple, is reportedly enticing potential recruits by promising a work environment characterized by 'less bureaucracy and more collaboration.' Furthermore, OpenAI is leveraging Apple's supply chain in China to facilitate the production of its upcoming devices. The company is said to be exploring a variety of hardware innovations, including a smart speaker without a display, smart glasses, digital voice recorders, and wearable pins. The expected timeline for the launch of these products ranges from late 2026 to early 2027. OpenAI has already partnered with Luxshare, a key assembler for Apple products like iPhones and AirPods, to help manufacture one of its consumer devices. Additionally, OpenAI is in talks with another assembly partner, Goertek, for components such as speaker modules. This partnership aims to enhance the manufacturing capabilities for OpenAI's initiatives. Currently, a prototype of one of these hardware devices is in development, designed to be pocket-sized with context awareness, allowing it to seamlessly integrate with OpenAI's AI models. This move marks a bold step for OpenAI into the competitive landscape of hardware technology.
